Dairy cattle

Genomic selection for Thai multibreed herdsThailand's dairy herd is a mix of Holstein and tropical breeds. With DPO and the University of Florida, Prof. Skorn's group develops the models used to rank Thai dairy bulls and cows, first from pedigree and milk records, then from DNA. DPO has run the evaluation since 1996.

Highlights

  • Replacement cows about 7.4 months sooner with genomics
  • 10th national genomic evaluation in 2026

From the field

What the group asks

  • How do you rank animals in a herd that mixes Holstein with tropical breeds?

Multibreed models estimate genetic parameters, predicted genetic values and genetic trends for milk, fat and age at first calving, starting from test-day and lactation records of the Thai multibreed population.

  • Can genomics make selection more accurate for smallholder farms?

Genomic-polygenic evaluations are compared with polygenic ones, using different SNP sets, random regression with Legendre polynomials and splines, imputation from low- to moderate-density chips, imputed non-genotyped cows and the effect of pedigree completeness.

  • Which genes and genome regions shape milk, fat and fertility in the tropics?

Genome-wide association, QTL and pathway-enrichment studies, sliding-window analyses of semen traits, selection-signature scans, linkage disequilibrium and mitochondrial D-loop studies of gene flow.
