Beef cattle

Crossbreeding, carcass and meat qualityFrom Brahman and Charolais crossbreds to Thai native cattle, the group studies growth, carcass traits and meat quality, including deep-learning weight estimation from phone photos.

Highlights

  • 5,531 cattle from 217 cooperative farms analysed
  • Member, national beef–buffalo production-cost subcommittee

From the field

What the group asks

  • Which crosses suit tropical beef production?

Heterosis and breed effects in Thai Native × Brahman crosses, pre-weaning growth and fertility of Angus × Brahman and Angus × Red Sindhi crossbreds, and direct and maternal genetic effects in a multibreed beef population.

  • What drives carcass value and price?

Carcass traits and pricing under a cooperative system, carcass weight, dressing percentage and marbling score, beef cuts of fattened Charolais crossbreds, protein and collagen in dry-aged beef, and non-carcass components.

  • Can a phone camera estimate a steer's weight?

Deep learning with mobile imaging for automated conformation indices and weight prediction, compared with traditional regression and other machine-learning methods.

  • What is the genetic potential of Thai indigenous cattle?

Genetic parameters and trends for birth and weaning weight in a Northeastern Thai indigenous line, and growth hormone gene polymorphism and pre-weaning growth.
